I need some help thinking through how I will set up my iPhone's email settings after I get it. I have a Gmail account and will more than likely use my computer to read 90% of my email but I want the option to check email on the iPhone while I'm away from the computer. Here is the applicable information:
1. I have my Gmail account on the web set up with both IMAP and POP enabled. 2. I have my Outlook email client used on the computer set up to download via POP all my Gmail messages which are then moved on the Gmail server out of the inbox into the All Mail folder. In other words, I can access all my Gmail messages via the web interface since none are ever deleted. 3. I want to set up my iPhone email to access my Gmail account so I can read any messages in the inbox while away from the computer but not to delete them from the Gmail servers. Here are my questions: 1. If I check messages in my Gmail inbox with the iPhone, are these messages actually downloaded to the phone not unlike how they are downloaded to my computer in Outlook or does this depend on some iPhone email setting? 2. If I'm able to view the messages with my iPhone as I do with the computer using the web interface, I assume I could use the iPhone to move them into the All Mail folder via IMAP to retain all the messages on the Gmail servers and also to avoid having messages I've already reviewed again downloaded to my computer's Outlook client via POP. I know this question is primarily procedural but any help in explaining how mail is treated on the iPhone and helping me accomplish my goal will be greatly appreciated.
