My experience is that usually there is a button or buttons on the screen
which you can activate to get the information you want.

I realize that the subject line appears backwards, but let me explain.
Sometimes, after pressing the home button until it dings, I will then ask
Siri a question, after which Siri responds in a way which requires a
response from me. Am I then to just say yes, or no, or whatever is
appropriate? Or, am I to again press the home button before responding?
