I know this suggestion might not be popular, but I remember when we used to fight with huge sheets of sticky back plastic and how to cover a table or counter top with it without a wrinkle and how to get bubbles out once on?.... prick it with a pin, then press; the pin hole is too small to see, but it lets the air out.
