Hi, Tom. I feel the same as you about iTunes. The View menu contains the commands to turn the side view on and off. The keyboard shortcut toggle to do this is ctrl + the letter S. If the side bar is not shown, ctrl + s will display it and if it is shown, ctrl + s will hide it.
I'm running Windows XP and notice sometimes that my iPhone also is not displayed when I connect it to the computer's USB port. When this happens, I unplug it and then reconnect it and then it usually displays in the iTunes side bar.
