Hi, There are some unconventional ways of doing this; for example, you can get external drives that connect wirelessly to your phone or if you wanted to use SD cards, you could buy the iPad camera connection kit which adds the ability to read various cards to your iPhone.
Note that I haven't tried iether of the above approaches so I can't really vouch for how good the wireless drives or connection kit is. Sure, it's a bit of a messy solution, but you do have options if you run out of storage. Cheers, Ben.
