The trouble is that if you want to sync your feeds in Windows or you have an Android tablet, iCloud's not going to help you do that. This is where Google Reader was such a good solution.
And while other solutions exist, Google has the infrastructure to pull something like this off. It takes a lot of bandwidth and server power to run a sync solution for millions of people. I'm sure if necessary, market forces will kick in and someone may well set up a service you have to pay for. And who knows, I guess if enough people keep signing those petitions, perhaps Google will reconsider.
