When your in a contact, flick your index finger right until you get to the send text button and double tap that. It will address your text message to that person assuming of course you have a phone number for that contact.
I have asked all my friends to let me know if they have an iPhone and used the iPhone button to label it as such. That way you can use face time which if your connect to WIFI lets you do video as well or if not iMessaging which lets you send text messages between iPhone users for free. If they don't have an iPhone, use the mobile button to label their cell phone. You'll use your texting plan in this case. For example, i have an unlimited texting plan but my Brother has a plan that he gets 500 free texts in a month but pays for each one over that amount.
