Hi Eileen,
1. If your case is easy to remove, then do that, it can't but help.
2. Are you right handed? I am left, but will offer my advice based upon the
norm, I.E. right handedness. place the phone on the top of the box, with the
open side of the box facing you. Obviously, you want the top right corner of
the phone to cover the round aperture for the camera. I find, when my phone is
in the right place, there is a gap between the front edge of the top of the box
and the phone's left hand side, which measures about half an inch (a large
centimetre) and this gap should be the same for the length of the phone to
ensure that it is straight.
3. i find that when my phone, especially not in the case, is in position, I can
feel the rounded edges of the hole, very slightly, at the top edge of the phone
and to the right.
4. I would suggest using Prizmo to start because you can use the speech command
to take the shot and, in this way, you won't dislodge the phone from its
position by tapping. Also, prizmo is more forgiving of slightly skewed text,
so, while you are finding your feet, you should get some reasonable results.
5. Make sure you are using 12 volts, either with the 12 volt battery backup or
with the mains adaptor. I find that the lights give off some heat, after a
minute of the 12 volts, so, if you can't tell otherwise, this should let you
know that the lights are working.
Placing the document inside:
1. I find it is more important to have the text square rather than centralised
as the camera has a complete view of the whole of the base of the box, so,
align your paper with the back and side of the box and make sure it is flat.
So, to sum up: your phone should be laying with its long, left side
parallel with the front of the box but about half an inch away. And you should
just be able to detect the edge of the round hole at the top of the phone on
the right and to the side.
It will help to have guiding tactiles, but I have not been using them, so
they are not essential, once you get a feel for the right position.
Don't worry, i promise you, once you have got used to it, it will work for
you!!! As always, start with something easy to scan so you can get some
successes to boost your confidence and don't worry if you need to keep coming
back for tips, other people may have similar issues at first, so your questions
will be helpful for others as well.
Ah! although both Prizmo and Text Grabber can work with text turned through
90 degrees, it is always better to have the text up the right way, so the top
should be to the right of the box, assuming you are right-handed.
HTH and do please let me know how it goes.
Sandy.
