David, I have my phone set to not automatically sync unless I do it manually. I know where that check box is, but I do not see the other button you mention. Can you tell me where I would find it?

The first thing is to make sure the sync does not occur. I believe there is a cancel button. The second radial button (I do not remember the name right now) opens the section which controls this. You will find a one-time overwrite iPhone contacts with whichever contact database you are using. There is also a similar option for appointments.
