Hi Paul, I like the Lire rss app a lot. You are correct to get it to automatically retrieve the full-text of all rss articles, you do need to make an inapt purchase. I have not used other rss readers on the iPhone but am very happy with Lire.
You can import feeds from google reader, enter them manually or have the software search a page for an rss feed.
