David,
I used language I thought a beginner would understand most. (Smile). We all
know what turning the power off on the iPhone means, so I went with that. I
guess I should have specified the difference between turning power off and
powering down which is actually kinda like putting the phone to sleep and
powering down one's computer, respectively.

One clarification, pressing the power button does not actually turn the
iPhone off. Pressing the power button places the iDevice in a standby state
where the screen is locked. The device can still play music, receive phone
calls, alerts, and messages, alert for appointments, and so forth.
Otherwise, this is an excellent introduction to the iPhone 5.

For Ray and others who are very new to iPhone or iPod Touch 5th gen,
If you are trying to turn off your iPhone simply press the single power
button at the top right-hand side. Pressing this power button again turns
it back on.
If the iPhone is off and you press the power button at top to turn it on,
or if you press the home button on the face of the iPhone to turn it on,
you can repeatedly single-finger swipe right until you hear "Slide to
unlock." At this point use a single finger to double tap on this item to
open your homepage. (Don't forget that you can repeatedly single finger
swipe back to the left if you don't find "Slide to unlock.") After the
single finger double tap on Slide to unlock you will be on the "desktop"
of your iPhone. (Smile).
Note: Tom Lang? posted a great tip. He suggested that once you press the
power to turn on your iPhone/iPod touch, you can press the bottom left
hand corner of the screen to quickly find "Slide to unlock." Now double
tap anywhere on your screen and you are at your HOmepage.
This is how your iPhone's homepage is probably laid out (There are 3
sections): Status bar at the top, 4 by 4 grid of app icons, and dock.
Status bar:
Activate the status bar by pressing your finger at the top 1/4 inch of
screen. You can now swipe from right to left and vice versa. This section
tells you such things as WIFI signal connection status, time, battery
power etc. To access a different part of the screen simply tap the center
of your iPod or iPhone.
Apps:
If you tap on the area of the screen below the Status bar you will be
focused on all your apps. You can swipe to the right to move through all
your apps. You will hear a tone when you move from app to app. You will
hear a very different tone when you move from row to row of icons. There
will be 4 app icons per row and a total of 4 rows of icons. You can double
tap an icon to open the app. To return to the homepage simply press once
the round Home button at the bottom of the iPhone or iPod Touch.
Dock:
The third section of your iPhone homepage screen will be contained within
the bottom row of icons. This dock will hold only 4 items. This is
analogous to your Windows7's Taskbar. You can quickly launch any app
pinned to this dock. I have placed The apps store in dock position 1 and
the calendar on dock position 4. This makes checking for app updates very
quickly as I need only tap the bottom left hand corner of screen to
determine if there are any app updates waiting for me. Determining today's
date is also very easy as I need only tap the bottom right hand corner of
the screen to have the date spoken to me.
The gesture you will probably use most is the left swipe and right swipe
which helps you navigate through each screen and various iPhone settings.
Think of it as pressing tab and shift tab on a Windows machine.
Let me know if you need any clarification or amplification of information.

It is at the top of the display. Cancel is at the bottom of the display.

Double-tap anywhere on the screen. Or, physically find the area that
says it and split-tap or slide
from left to right.
