Hi Tessa and Others,

I posted the AppleVis app deals about the Audubon apps, that are on
sale through today in honor of Audubon's birthday. If any of you are
thinking of getting the Audubon Birds app, please realize that some of
the newest app versions have a startup screen for setting up a
NatureShare account that has real accessibility problems. I'd either
get the Audubon Birds and Butterflies app, which has two apps
combined, but doesn't have the problem startup screens, or be prepared
to get past those start screens to the main, accessible part of the
app whenever you launch this app. I've sent in a problem report to
the developer, but haven't heard back.

I forget that many people read the twitter announcements of app deals,
but don't read the comments posted with the deals. Here's the text of
what I posted for the Audubon Birds and Butterflies app (without the
embedded links to the AppleVis forum posts, since I've used copy and
paste):
• Audubon Birds and Butterflies - A Field Guide to North American
Birds and Butterflies

Audubon Birds and Butterflies is on sale for $1.99. it regularly lists
for $16.99. All the Audubon apps are on sale, with single subject apps
that normally list between $4.99 and $14.99, priced at $0.99 each, in
honor of Audubon's birthday. This sale runs through April 29, 2013.
These are generally pretty accessible apps, with two unlabeled buttons
at the top of the main guide screen. The first is really a label for
"Audubon Guides" that has no button action and the second is an "Info"
button.

You can read a forum discussion post on the overall general
accessibility of these apps, and the poster went on to post app
entries for the Audubon apps for Mammals, Reptiles and Amphibians, and
North American Insects and Spiders. He also discussed his preference
for the Audubon Birds app format a forum post about Audubon apps vs.
iBird apps. I've now noted in that post that some of the most recent
Audubon apps, including the one for Audubon Birds, have start-up
screens for registering for a NatureShare account that are not
accessible. While it's possible to get through that screen and another
tutorial screen (detailed in the comment to that post), and the main
app is still accessible, this is a major pain. I've written a
detailed description of the problem to the developer, but have not
heard back yet.

I also note that all the new app versions that reference NatureShare
seem much larger, as noted in the reviewers' comments. For example,
the Audible Birds and Butterflies app linked here, that still uses the
pre-NatureShare format is 752 MB for both birds and butterflies.
That's comparable to the iBird Pro app size of 582 MB, to encompass
the extensive bird song libraries. But the new Audubon Bird app with
the problematic NatureShare registration start screens is 886 MB.

You can also find the posts, with all relevant links, if you go to the
current App Deals section of AppleVis.com.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
