My newist phone is the 4S, and favourite case so far, and had it on two different phones so far, is Otterbox's Impact series. a 1piece rubbery thing which is a good balance of protection without over-bulking the device. I have a stick'on screen protector anyway. The front of it does frame the working part of the screen very well, so this makes a good guide too. I always lay my phone face down, and the screen is kept clear of the surface I put it down on, and it is very good grip so can never slide away.
