Brian, it could be the case with that particular keyboard.  I just experimented 
with mine, and I can press the escape key to unlock the screen and then use the 
home button to return to the home screen from anywhere on the phone.

I have the Amazon Basics Bluetooth keyboard that's only around $30.00 at 
Amazon.  One of the reasons I purchased this keyboard was because of the 
discussions on this list.  I know keyboards are a common topic, so you can 
probably find other recommendations from browsing the list archives.
