Hey there, You can also hit the lock button while it is up to your head. That will, or should, disconnect the call.

VoiceOver commands do not work all that well when the phone is close to your ear. If they did, you would likely be doing all kinds of things with your face against the phone. I find that moving the phone away from my ear to do any voiceover commands works best. It's hard to describe the problem, but I just struggle to generate the force that is required to effectively perform this gesture in time. As a result, when I take the phone away from my ear to disconnect the call, it automatically goes into speaker mode, and it usually takes me a good few seconds to finally perform the gesture successfully.
