Hi,
I often buy books, on iBooks, kindle, nook, etc. But the problem I have with
this, is not the fact that I have to purchase the books, but the fact that I
have to use the vo voice to read the book. I'd rather have a separate tts voice
reading the book to me, so then I can lock the screen and do other things on my
device while I listen to the book. That's my take.

This is so true! Why should we expect developers to make apps accissable if
it won't make them any money? It's only right that we take advantage of this
accessibility. Buying a book will not do any harm!

Might I propose an additional tach here?

Now that we have a much greater accessibility to a vast library of books
which we never had before, might it be a good idea to take one more step toward
equality by purchasing books and only using BookShare as a last resort when we
cannot find a book we need / really want?

This to me at least, fosters equality and a sense of empowerment. Yes?

This also shows the makers of accessible reading apps and platforms that we
not only appreciate their work but value their work. Not to mention the fact
that we are now able to contribute to an author in the same way as the literate
population as a whole does.

This is truly an important and valuable thing, is it not?

Thanks so much for such a great thread! Y'all rock!

    Smiles,

    Cara :)

One big advantage to the kindle app is the amazing number of books we, as
blind readers, now have the ability to access in one place. It was stated, in
a recent Tech Doctor podcast, that this number is 1.8 million (I have not
confirmed this.) Not all these books will be readable with this app (the ones
that are images), and not all books on Amazon are available through Kindle, but
just having such a large number of readable books is the biggest advantage.
Another advantage is how quickly we will be able to buy these books after they
are issued as print copies. They probably are available through kindle within
a few days of publication. The Nook, and Google Books services will have some
of them, but Amazon has the largest number of eBooks.

That having been written, as a blind reader, because I could not own
books at a reasonable price, I am very use to borrowing and reading books, and
until recently, returning them. So, I assure you, I check Bookshare, Bard,
Learning Ally, or any other legal source from which I can borrow and read
books, before I buy them.

      Hello List,

Besides the obvious of,Bookshare not having a particular book, what
other advantages does the Kindle app have over using Bookshare to access books?
I will check Bookshare first to see if the book that I want to read is there to
download because of the ability to download the book for free. I have "Read2Go"
& Voice Dream apps on the phone to accomplish this. What features in the Kindle
app is unique to app that is not in the other apps? Input on this would be
great.

      Thanks in advance.

      Best,
      Eileen
