Yes, this has always been one of the major difficulties with speech
recognition. Siri uses universal speech recognition. This means, the standard
male and female accents are set as the basic analysis for attempting to
interpret what you are saying. Here in NZ, I use US as my speech input because
I am from the US and have a Southwest US accent. There is no NZ accent
programmed into Siri, so the people I know choose either British or Australian.
They then modify their accent to sound more Australian or more British whenever
they talk to Siri. Sometimes, it takes a few attempts. All of them sound
different when talking to Siri or using speech dictation than how they sound
normally.

In other words, you must practice sounding like the accent that Siri or
Dictation is listening for if you want the speech recognition to understand you.

Since I am in NZ, the British spelling rules apply. Therefore, I set my
keyboard to UK or Australian. This means, though I have my speech input set to
US, my words need to be UK. For instance, I must say full stop when I want a
period punctuation mark. When I say period, the word period is inserted into my
text. And yes, when I regularly forget this, I need to redo my dictation or do
a lot of editing.
