Hi Sieghard. I'm testing the Duel Electronics XGPS 150A. Ebony consulting is a reseller for this unit.
IPod touch and Ipad don't have a GPS receiver built in and they require a unit like this external to do gps navigation. I don't have an IPhone to test on, but I'm a bit old school. Back when I was using IPaq windows mobile phones, the receivers were good most of the time, but my IBlue 737 was great all the time, It was consistently accurate to 3 metres even in overcast or urban canyon. I'm travelling every day for work, often in unfamiliar areas. So, I loved the accuracy. I also appreciated the extended battery life. The duel and the IBlue both have 30 hour usage batteries which makes them a bit chunky, but goes a long way to extend the battery life of the phone. I need that phone to be a phone because I could be stuck in extreme weather, held up in traffic, lost, late, hit by a car… I have to be able to make emergency calls and stay in touch with clients. The more I could get out of a charge, the better. That's especially true now that I check email, listen to radio, skype people, handle bookings and support calls all on the road from my phone. I'm using a google nexus 4 right now and it supports the XGPS. So, I'm eventually going to get my hands on Nearby Explorer and compare the accuracy of the XGPS and the internal on the nexus 4. Even if the accuracy is the same though, and even considering that I've been getting three days out of each charge, I think I'll probably stick with an external gps receiver for the extremely high end uses I plan to put it too. You know, the cost is pretty steep, and there aren't that many blind people who do the senseless amount of travel I do. So, for a lot of users the external might not be worth it. It might be true that for you, the accuracy and uptime of the phone gps is up to your needs and it wouldn't really be a benefit to you to sink money into an external. For me though, it just makes sense.
