I have a related question. When purchasing Kindle books, is there any way
prior to purchase to ascertain whether the book is actually text as opposed to
a scanned image? I also would like the answer to this question regarding Nook
books.

  Thanks.

With the Kindle app, text to speech does not have to be enabled for the book or
magazine or newspaper to be accessible. That flag is only relevant if you are
using the Kindle device with the text to speech feature built in. Since the app
works with VO, it doesn't matter if text to speech is enabled for the
publication.
