Ricardo, just a clarification:  This behavior doesn't constitute a
problem.  It's just quite unexpected, and I wondered if I had a
defective iPhone or a bad cable.  I don't know if this oddity is
present in some firmware revisions and not in others.  I'm using iOS
6.1.4.
