Hi OCR practicianers!
Having bought an Italian voice from prizmo, I thought to see if I could use
the app to read a book with that voice. I had 2 copies from Gutenberg, both
"Alice in wonderland". The first copy in English and the second in Italiano.
Well, I made a mistake and chose the one in english. I opened it, and selected
then copied all. I then went to the voice tab in Prizmo and pasted the book
there. So, it seems that the space allotted there is quite roomy. But then the
Italian voice started reading, english text, but sort of italianised. I
couldn't shut him up! Probably, because the text was such a large chunk, and
the screen-reader voice a large programme, I don't really know, but I couldn't
do anything. VO couldn't deal with the conflict! I thought to let him read
through the text until he got tired, but he went on and on! I put the phone
under a cushion and went away, but when i returned, the babble was still
flowing. I turned the phone off and came back to it later. I managed to get to
the app switcher and close Prizmo.
That was a few days ago. Just now, i opened the reader tab again and
managed, after waiting an age for the screen to respond, to turn the rotor
(each turn took about 2 minutes to register) untill I got to "Edit" then
"Select all" and, finally, "Cut" which did the trick! The edit field was now
empty.
Just thought to warn people that while is seems possible to use prizmo as
some sort of book reader, using the voice of your choice, it might not be a
great idea to put so much text in there.
having said all this, in reading the blurb, I see that Prizmo says it can
be used from other apps, including, using the voices, but, as yet, I have not
found a way to do this, has anyone else?
Meanwhile, I have been playing with the White option in Readability, but
must admit that I get much better results from Text Grabber when it comes to
white on black, or other colour combinations. I suppose, it could be said that
if you only want enough info to let you know what you are looking at, Prizmo
might work for you, although, mostly, I get "No text could be extracted",
whereas, after some abortive attempts with TG, I can often get a messy
rendition.
Talking Goggles seems much less fazed by colours of white on black, but I
just don't get enough info to make it worth it! Perhaps, I am expecting too
much.
Just some observations,
Sandy.
