I have no personal experience with any of the Kindle readers, the following is simply what I have gathered through reading about them. The most accessible one is the kindle keyboard. A totally blind person can do some things with it, but there is more he or she can't do, than can. My opinion: Get the Kindle app, which is free, and for the most part, quite accessible, much more so than any of the stand alone kindle models. Then, use your phone to read kindle books. Tell your friend thanks, but that you would rather he or she spend the money on something else for you, perhaps several kindle books, or just give you the money.

In terms of reading by voice, both work really wel. The Kindle app has a neater interface. When you go into a book, all you get is the page. YOu don'tget extra controls. Braille is finiky in the Kindle app, but it works well in the Nook app,but goodness the layout is weird in the Nook app. There are weird double spaces at points and I can't see a reason for them.
