Hi Angus, I find that nowadays there are so many WiFi hotspots available, mostly hotels have WiFi so even if you don't have your phone unlocked and use a local SIM in another country, it is not so hard to find a WiFi and use Skype or another VoIP service which allows you to make very cheap international calls.
