If your contract is over with AT&T, request them to unlock the phone.
I use T-Mobile, another GSM carrier. If you are in an area with good
T-Mobile coverage, consider their basic prepaid plan. For $30 a
month, I have unlimited data and texts and 100 minutes of voice. For
more minutes, I use apps like Magic Jack that use the data connection
to make voice calls.
One of the reasons I have stuck with my job as long as I have is the
ability to afford tools that extend my independence like the iPhone
and the Seeing Eye app.

carrier besides AT&T, is that possible with my iPhone, which used to be
with AT&T. I also should have mentioned that I was outside of my 2 year
original contract, so it didn’t cost me anything to get rid of the data
plan.
