When the battery is at zero the phone does not work, plugging it in of course solves the problem, however, be aware that it will take a few minutes for you to use the phone, it should start talking, saying probably "screen locked when it has enough battery power to do so.
The phone will alert you at 20% that it is low and again at 10% with messages you will have to dismiss.
