You can store your maps locally with Google Maps. I haven't done this
myself, but here's one article where this feature is explained:

Hi
Maybe the other store the map on the iPhone and the other not. Seeing Eye is
using a server and Navigon is storing the map on the iPhone.
Wonder how Google Maps do it? If they store maps on the iPhone, it would be
a great peace of free software.
Take care

Is it true that the app can only use one map engine at a time, and if so,
what are the pros and cons of each engine?

One major difference between the Seeing Eye app and any other GPS app
are blind specific features such as announcement of cross streets,
the LookAround wand and description of intersections such as 4-way
intersection with explanation of which roads you have and which direction
they are going.
If you simply want an app to use in a vehicle and to assist a driver
then I think Navigon is still the way to go although maybe Google
Maps will do the trick, I haven't tried it.
As for the Seeing Eye app, it uses the MapQuest engine, but it uses
map data from Navteq and Open Street Maps. Navteq is also used by Navigon
and Garmin.

I have been told that the latest version of Google Maps is quite
Voice Over friendly. Also new features on Google Maps include turn by
turn directions as well as POI etc. That the Google x Maps is totally
free and is being constantly updated.
How does this compare with other options like Seeing Eye GPS? Since
this is about 70 dollars per year. Also this has data from MapQUEST
which arguably may not be as good as that of Google Maps.
Overall both have their pros and cons. Can anyone who has used both
give their experience and comments? Much appreciated!
Best wishes and many blessings!
