You said flick 3 fingers down but that brings up the notification center, not control center. To bring up control center, touch the time in the status bar, then do a 3 finger swipe up, not down, to open control center.

access and flick right until you come to the lock orientation and double tap

today, with the help of Apple, and I cannot figure out how to lock the
orientation so it will stay in landscape. I went into the app switcher and
