Thank you Gadget girl. I thought I had gone crazy and now know I wasn't. Never thought of just closing the apps in the switcher, though perhaps if I had not been so frustrated I might have thought of it. Thanks for the tip and mmaking it plain it just wasn't me!

Voiceover will give me the name of the app and tell me it's running and then tell me to swipe up with three fingers to close the app. I again, swipe up with one finger, and voiceover says, close and the name of the app that is running. I then double tap with one finger to close that app. Then, if any other apps are open, the next one will appear and voiceover will say, running. I again double tap using one finger. I continue this procedure and till I hear the word home, meaning I have closed all running apps. I double tap on the home button, and Voila, I am back at the home screen. .
