The article I was referring to was around the announcement last winter.
It does appear though that this won't work on new devices, even if you
were still using this service after January of this year.

This is very important for all to know about gmail and push.
I just found this out through apple. It's especially critical for those
with brand new devices.
When you setup a new email account, do not use exchange. Set it up under
gmail.
What happened, google disabled you the ability to use Microsoft exchange.
I found this out as I was trying to set mine up and it wouldn't let me.
So set up your new gmail accounts, where you have the drop down for
Microsoft, aol, yahoo, select google, and you'll be good.
