Imap is the way to go for the stock mail app and Gmail. That or just have
the Gmail app installed separately. I needed to be able to receive emails
immediately for one particular account and I wasn't happy with Apple's
performance on gettign them in a timely manner so I just use the Gmail app
for this particular account.

Also, when Google supported Exchange as a protocol for Gmail, you could sync
your email, contacts and calendar all with one account. Now if you're going
to use Gmail, you need a separate account to sync your contacts and use the
CardDav protocol.

That is the answer to your question. However, now that Gmail is doing away
with push you can't set up and those that have them now set up will not be
what you use them in iOS 7.
