Ok! that's what I wanted to know. It won't become active until I activate it.

Thanks!

Alan,

If you order a 5S either directly from AT&T or from Apple indicating you
want to renew your contract, your 5S will ship with a Nano SIM installed
(it's yet again half the size of the Micro SIM in your iPhone 4. Once you
get the 5S you activate it and this will automatically activate your
existing phone number on the new 5S and your 4 at this point becomes an iPod Touch (sort of). You can then either keep your 4 or ask AT&T to unlock it, I
would then wipe it, take the SIM out and you can sell it as an unlocked
iPhone 4 which somebody might buy who wants an iPhone and use it with a
prepaid SIM or maybe on Straight Talk or another MVNO.

I just ordered a Nano SIM only from my MVNO here in Canada, Koodo since I am
buying my iPhone unlocked and without contract from Apple. When I upgraded
from a 4 to the 4S all I had to do is take the SIM out of my 4 and put it in
the 4S, but since the 5 and 5S use the Nano SIM that is not possible or at
least not without a lot of trouble. Of course the Nano SIM I ordered is
already associated with my account and phone number, so as soon as I put it in my 5S and activate it it will work on my existing phone number. It's very
easy and straight forward.

Regards,
Sieghard

Ok, I guess then I'm not understanding but sense I'm with AT&T as well maybe you can answer my question. I have an iPhone 4. My 2 year agreement was up
last May. I'm already 5 months past that and have been thinking about
buying the 5s. So assuming I stick with AT&T, how would that work then? My present phone would stay active until AT&T got my money etc. You can't have
2 phones active at the same time both with the same provider and both with
the same phone number. So at some point the old phone would have to be
deactivated wouldn't it? So would the new phone arrive already with the
same phone number?

Hi,
If you have an existing account with a carrier and you're getting your
device to work on that same carrier your account related details including
phone number should remain the same.
In the case of AT&T my new 5s shipped with the sim card already installed.
There was no reason to retain the old one or swap it out. I hope that
helps.
Robin

I've been thinking of doing the same thing but I do have a question first.
Can you retain your existing phone number or are you required to get a new
phone number.

I'm jealous. I ordered my iPhone 5s using the apple.com app from my
iPhone and it showed a delivery date of October. I got notice of
shipment over the weekend and my card was charged. So, now it looks like
I'll be getting it on this Monday. Maybe I should have waited and just
done what you did. Still though, I didn't have to go out, get dressed,
and look somewhat presentable to go order the phone either. <smile>.

I think I will opt to return to the AT&T store for help setting it up,

I know many of you say it is simple to do yourself, but I don't trust my
technical skills to get out of a pickle if I get into one.
