Hello Donald and all,

When I saw your post, I went searching the web to see what information I could find. I found out that Pandora streams music through its mobile apps at 64 KBS for free users, and 192 KBS for paid users. Since you said you were a free Pandora user, this would calculate to around 29 MB per hour.
If you were a paid user, then this would be about 86 MB per hour.

After doing a lot of reading and searching through forms and blogs, I found several people that conducted test to see how much data Pandora uses while streaming. Most people determined that Pandora used between 30 and 35 MB of data per hour.
And this was using iOS 6, and Verizon as their carrier.

Now Verizon has its own data calculator on its site that you can use to estimate how much data you will use doing a certain task. Verizon states that you will use an average of around 60 MB of data per hour streaming audio.

But after doing all of this research, you used 75 MB in less than an hour.
So I decided to do my own test and see what I got.

I am using an iPhone 5 running iOS7.02.
I ran Pandora for 6 Minutes, and this is what I got:
6.5 MB of data used according to Dataman.
This would be equivalent to 65 MB per hour.
Which would be close to what you got in your usage.

Now, since I was testing, I also did a test using iTunes Radio, and this is what I got:
I ran it for 6 Minutes, and I used: 13.7 MB according to Dataman!
This is equivalent to 137 MB per hour!

I can not say why there is such a difference in the data used in the test I found compared to what we used. I do know when I bought my iPhone 5 about a year ago, the Verizon worker told me that I should be able to average around 25 hours a month streaming audio. If you work this out, on a 30 day month, then it comes to around 80 MB of data per hour streaming audio.
But of coarse, this would depend on the quality of audio you are streaming.

All in all, since our numbers are close, I would say that unfortunately they are accurate.
I hope all of this has been helpful.

Subject: Data usage question

I feel foolish asking this question because I am certain that something
is radically wrong. But what?

One of my IOS devices is a 4S running IOS 7.02. It is activated on the
Verizon network. The other day, while waiting for an appointment, I
listened to Pandora for 55 minutes, using cellular data. I have the app
called Dataman which I checked for usage and found that Dataman alleged
a data usage of almost 75 megs for that 55 minute period. I remember
reading a post a couple of months ago on this list stating that Pandora
usage should be perhaps 16 megs per hour. Prior to turning on Pandora, I
had cleared the app switcher of everything with the exception of
Dataman; so I know that no other app was using cellular data while
Pandora was running.

So the question becomes, is it even possible for Pandora (the free
version) to use almost 75 megs in slightly less than an hour? Opinions
and ideas please.
