Pressing the Home Button twice will, as you know, open the Switcher. Of course, 
the Apex requires that pass-through command to send space-h to an iOS device, 
so using that will not work unless you are the world's fastest typist. Instead, 
quickly hit the two inner thumbkeys twice, and that should work.
