Hi Rob,  The only question of yours that hasn't really been answered properly 
is the one about the number pad.

Fact is, apple took their number pad off of their systems 4 or 5 years ago.  
Having said that, once you become comfortable with voiceover, you can download 
and install key remap for macbook.  This is a very powerful tool which among 
other things, restores the numpad to the right hand side of the portable 
keyboard.

Then you would be able to use the fn key plus the 17 or 18 keys on the right of 
your keyboard, such as j, k, and l, to do numpad functions.

I just introduced some one to the mac on friday and wrote up a lot of 
descriptions, instructions, and shortcut keys.  I've also written up basic 
instructions for workshops that I've conducted.  If you'd like to have any of 
this, please let me know and I will send it along.
