Pages is not for spreadsheets, only for documents. The Apple app for spreadsheets is called Numbers, but don't count on being able to edit excel spreadsheets with it. I have not done much with it since it is such a pain to use given that you can only deal with a few columns and rows at a time.
What kind of alterations are you trying to make. I wouldn't go out and spend the ten dollars on the app unless someone gives you solid information on how it can be done. Of course, if you bought a new device since iOS 7 came out, you get Numbers for free.
