I have a 4S and got Garage Band free.I had my 4S for almost two years.

If you have a 5s, that's considered a new device so iWork and iLife suites
are both free. Garage Band is part of the iLife suite.

Ah, I see. Garage Band is part of iLife. According to this article, iLife
apps are only free on new devices, so I suspect Grant is right, although

On my Garageband just updated, on iPhone 5, is no longer possible to
change the combo boxes, like that for the octave on a keyboard.
Any one has noticed the same problem? I think we have to immediately
report it to Apple.
