True, I usually start from my oldest unread message, so after deleting a
message I have to do a flick left to get to the next unread message and
then I'll hear the preview being read after a bit of a pause.

When in the in box, you can flick up or down to get to delete and
then you can double tap. If you have hints turned on in VoiceOver and
you set your preview in the mail app to display a handful of lines
then you can hear quite a bit of an email and decide if you want to
read the whole thing, save it for later or just delete it. This can
