Hi John, I have a retail store and we use handheld Symbol USB scanners at the register. These have a trigger, sort of a button you push as you scan and which turns the scanner on. Anyhow, the speed and ease of use of these is amazing, I can wave the thing roughly over a package or tag and no matter if the barcode is right side up upside down or sideways or skewed, the scanner gets It.
It is definitely easier than, for example, using the iPhone with Digit-Eyes. Here you get the best results if you make sure you are lined up properly, then start the scanning process and slowly lift your iPhone up and away so the camera progressively sees more of the package or box. Any sideways movements are not good because everytime you move the phone the camera has to auto focus again. The USB barcode scanners I can swipe across a package or tag pretty rapidely and they still get it.
