I figured that, if Digit Eyes was a lot better, there'd be no point in re-installing Red Laser. At your suggestion, though, I did try it, and I scanned seven different items, some cans, some boxes. It got every single one, and much, much faster than Digit Eyes ever has! I am absolutely astounded at the app's speed and forgiveness in terms of code positioning. I just turned on the LED flash, and moved the phone over the item, and the code was found. In my tests so far, Red Laser blows Digit Eyes out of the water.
