To my knowledge, yes it can. However, to be honest, I'm quite taken with Red Laser and would suggest you try it out first. It is not quite up there with a dedicated scanner, at least I imagine it isn't having never tried such a device myself, but it is quite good with just the iPhone's camera. Scanners are a few hundred dollars, so this might be worth looking into before you make such a purchase.
