Hi Tracy, If you don't have an existing stereo or surroundsound system, then you don't need an airport express. You can just buy the airplay speaker and get it connected to your Wi-Fi network, and you should be good to go. If, on the other hand, you have a stereo system that you like, you could buy an airport express and connected to the input of your stereo system. Then you would connect the airport express to your existing wi-fi network.
