As Christopher said, it would help if you let us know if you had your gmail account set up as a POP account before and if this worked. As I said before, I don't want to say you shouldn't use POP under any circumstances, but could you also let us know your reasoning why you want to use POP and not set up your gmail account as a default Gmail account on the iPhone which means it will use IMAP and also sync contacts? What other devices do you have, e.g. desktop PC, laptop PC, Mac computer, other iDevice(s)?
