Yes, the hardware different for ipad mini and the new mini retina is generally the processer, and also the size. The new mini is actually a touch bigger than the mini 1st gen. Like Raul said, 1st gen mini is using ipad2 processer, and the latest mini is using a i7 processer. It is not too noticable but the 1st gen mini is slightly slowing down with ios7, compare to ios6. Which, it is rather expected. However, like Sieghard said, it is depends on an individual. Can you accept a slightly slow processer, (less than 1 second slow) or you need to be always on the fasters and the latest and newest device. As for me, i would like to have th newest and latest and fastest, but, i'm not sure if i can justify to pay another $500 or more to own that. Not to say Apple just replace my first gen mini for a new first gen mini after my Apple care out by 2 months. If you are considering a new ipad mini, then, by all means, ipad mini retina will be a better choice for you than the mini 1st gen.
