Hello Lori,

Here are some very good instructions for Prismo. I am pasting this from a
message from another list, so will take out any identifying info. The writer
does a great job describing it.

Dear Friends of xxxxxxx,

I am a VoiceOver user on my iPod touch and Mac, and would like to share an
amazing app I found for iOS, which I use on my iPod touch (5th Gen). Prizmo is
the name, and OCRing is the game! Prizmo is an OCR app that wasn't initially
built with accessibility in mind, but recently has made sure VoiceOver users
are able to use it with ease. Before I explain all the bells and whistles this
app includes, I would like to say that I have used this app to convert magazine
pages and restaurant menus into editable text and used the built-in read aloud
feature to listen what has been captured. The accuracy is pretty darn good in
my opinion. Of course there will be a few mistakes here and there, but overall,
the main meat and potatoes come out great! Prizmo has a built-in "read aloud"
feature once the document has been captured and OCRed, in addition to many
other features. Prizmo currently runs for $9.99 on the Apple AppStore. For a
quick step-by-step follow through, please continue reading.

User Interface: The main portion of the app's main page is a grid, something
like iBooks in grid view or as seen on iOS home screen/pages. This is where all
your documents you have captured will be stored. This app works locally so no
need for internet use at anytime! On the bottom half of the screen, there is
three buttons centered. The first one, positioned to the left, is to create a
new document. The middle button is to take a quick capture so you don't have to
save it I believe. The button positioned tot he right is the voice reader, or
read aloud, option. Traditionally, one would choose the "create a new document"
option.

Creating a New Document: When using VoiceOver, navigate to the "create a new
document" button by flicking from left to right until you hear the option. Then
double tap to enter. A popup will appear from the bottom, asking to select a
document format. There are three options; 1) text, 2) business card, 3) image,
and then of course there is a "cancel" option at the end. Flick left to right
once to select the "text" option. Double tap to enter.

The next popup you'll be presented with will ask you to choose how you would
like to capture. There are three options; 1) take picture, 2) from photo album,
3) last taken. Again, flick left to right once to select "take picture" then
double tap.

You will now be presented with the actual capture method. In other words, if
you chose to take a picture, then you should be at the camera screen now. On
this screen, there are many options you can choose from. At the top left
corner, you have the option to select whether you want flash to be turned on or
off, This option would only apply to those who have a built-in LED flash - iPod
touch and iPhone. If the paper isn't too glossy, I would highly recommend using
the flash as the flash will dramatically increase the resolution in any case.
At the top center, you will have a button that says "options". If you double
tap on that, you will be presented a little sheet that includes no more than a
few options. The first option is to have guided assistance. If one is
completely blind, I suggest to have this feature turned on. This guided
assistance feature is just okay in my opinion because it will tell you to move
left, up, etc, until the main body text is detected, but once it is good to go,
it will say "no visible page". The page is visible, so take some pictures and
play around with it until your able to speak its language. As with any document
you want to OCR, I would recommend having some kind of ruler system that can
help you line the document up so this won't be much of a hassle, unless of
course you adore a challenge. Play around and maybe you'll find it easier than
you think! The next option, now at the top right corner of the screen, is where
you can select your default paper size and such. For some reason, I believe the
default is set to A4. So if this is the case, simply double tap and select US
Letter. Finally, at the bottom center of the screen, you have the snapshot
button. Once lined up and all that jazz, you can now take your picture! Please
note that once you have setup al the features you want to use form now on, for
example, flash turned on or off, guided assistance, US Letter, etc, you don't
have to bother with that stuff again. After a picture has been taken, simply
flick left to right until you hear the "done" button located at the bottom
right corner. Note, you can also take several pictures after you take the first
one if you have multiple pages to OCR.

Processing and Exporting: Now that we have eaten our main course, it's time to
enjoy some lovely dessert! After you select the "done" button, you will be
presented with all the images you have captured in a vertical ist format. Flick
left to right until you hear an export document option located at the bottom
right corner. You will then be taken to the export page, which includes many
options. The options are presented in a traditional vertical list format, so
simply flick left to right to hear all the options you have for the captured
document. You will hear a "read aloud" option, export to text document option,
email, message, and an export to PDF, searchable or non-searchable format.
Whatever option you choose, Prizmo will ask you if you would like to preform
OCR before exporting. Don't select the skip option if you want this document to
be selectable and editable. If you choose the "read aloud" option, the document
text will appear in a player screen, with a previous paragraph, play/pause, and
next paragraph, buttons at the bottom of the screen. By default, VoiceOver will
start reading out the document for you, but you want to pause VoiceOver and get
the app itself to read aloud to you for this to work properly. So select the
play button to get Prizmo to start reading the document to you. As it reads,
the currently read word will be highlighted in yellow. Once done, simply select
the "done" button at the top right corner. Because I have a bit of sight left,
I like to sue the read aloud feature to instantly listen to a document, and
then like to go back to the export page and export the document as a searchable
PDF so I can open it in iBooks so I can have either VoiceOver read it to me,
and toa further extension, have Voice Dream read it to me, or pinch to zoom in
on captured images and overall document layout if need be.

I would like to have a video demonstration of me using Prizmo with VoiceOver in
the next little while, a week or so, uploaded to my youtube channel. I actually
have the video already done and edited, I just need to spend a few minutes to
finish up a few things and upload it. I have many new videos I plan on
uploading to my channel this month when I have time. If you're interested to
keep an eye or ear, or even two eyes or two ears peeled, you can keep checking
my channel by searching "mvastworld", that's, "m" as in Michael, "vast" as in
Vic, and "world" as in wonderful, for updates.

Anyways, I hope this app will prove to be just as useful for you as it is for
me. I wish you all the best of fun playing around with this app, and hope you
enjoy it!
