There haven't been further details, but Obihai is supposed to be coming out with their own $40/annual offer soon.

Thanks so much for the details. I guess I will have to find something else soon as I use the Talkatone app and the OBI100 device. Plenty of texting apps out there, but I haven't found any that will allow you to call out for free. Some allow you to receive calls for FREE, but not call out. Anyone know of any free apps that will allow a person to make phone calls, or at least any that won't drain the bank account? Anyone had luck with the Majic Jack app?

Hi, just to be clear, it's not that Google Voice is disabling third party apps, they are disabling the XMPP usage by third party apps because they are going to the Google Hangouts platform I believe. So, if the third-party app uses XMPP, then yes, it will stop working in May 2014. For example, people like you and me who have an unlocked phone bridge from Obihai, called the Obi Talk, and use it as a home phone service with Google Voice, will need to find a different solution very soon. I believe that apps like Talkatone which use Google Talk to make and receive Google Voice calls will also stop working. Apps like GV Connect which use Talkatone as a backbone to make data only calls via Google Voice will also stop working. I can only hope that the texting service that GV Connect uses to get the messages to and from Google Voice isn't using XMPP. Otherwise, it too will stop working. I asked the GV Connect developer about this and he seems to be confident that it will continue to work, minus the Talkatone access of course.

the service was down, which has never happened to me before.*
