Although it is better now, this problem has been around since the beta tests, and they, for whatever the reason, couldn't get it straightened out before the final release. I have had the best luck getting the start/stop button to work correctly, after it malfunctions, if I hit the on screen play button again while whatever I didn't want to start playing is still playing. This problem, plus the skipping backward for no reason, which seems to be a little worse in IOS 7.1, are the only two problems I have with this app. I am glad to have it, problems and all.
