Assuming that the app you used is accessible, which app is it and does it
also allow for the importing of such files to the iPhone's contacts?

I just discovered that there are a lot of apps on the app store that 
allow you to do that.  They would make a VCF file of all of your 
contacts and allow you to email to yourself and use it as you wish. I 
randomly
downloaded one of them and did just that.
