I'm guessing the lack of a file system was not an oversight. How many people would stop using iTunes if they could move files back and forth from their device to their computer or other devices? I'm thinking Apple did this intentionally for this and other reasons to protect their proprietary personality. After trying to purchase DropBox, which would have gotten them a lot closer to making file transfers easier, they are now about to offer their own version of a DropBox like system. It's not necessarily a bad thing. It's just an Apple way of doing things. But I don't think a company like Apple with all its brain power would have simply forgotten to include a file system.

I'm getting an easier to use, more accessible and more secure device at the cost of being able to access the underlying file structure of the iPhone.
