Yes, I'm on iOS 7, the latest version. I can't find what you're referring to. It still tells me I need an extra 8+ GB. I don't want to back up everything, just the basics like Calendar, Contacts, Reminders, etc.

Go to your iCloud settings, then Storage and Backup, then Manage Backups. Double tap the name of the device to manage, and turn off any apps you don't want stored in iCloud. You can save a lot of space this way, with apps that either rely on other storage (like Dropbox) or apps whose data you don't care about.
