Kelly, I understand that backing up and syncing are two different
operations. I brought up the backing up because backing up did not save my
friend's apps when we did that before upgrading her phone to iOS 7 using
iTunes. As I understand it, you must sync your device with your iTunes on
your computer to get the apps downloaded with the phone to your computer. Or
maybe the step I omitted which was mentioned by another poster was to select
the menu option of File, Devices, Transfer purchases from the iPhone. I
guess that was what I needed to do before trying to upgrade my friend's
computer because that should have gotten the apps over.

I'm still a bit confused regarding how syncing fits into the process and
what is needed and when to ensure that an iTunes backup made to one's
computer will restore a new or wiped phone to exactly what it was when the
backup was made. I never want to make an assumption again especially where
someone else's phone is concerned.

I know when I've run syncing programs before that you normally have an
option to let one item or the other being synced control what the output
results are. This is critical when the synced items are starting from a
position where each has stuff on it that the other does not. If a setting
does not exist to create a combination of what's on both, something is going
to be lost.

Alan,

YOu are combining the tasks of backup and synchronization. there is a
setting in the file menu to initiate a device backup. also, when
upgrading, end users should do a backup to iCloud and then an itunes
backup. The end user needs to force quit all apps and reset network
settings so no apps are using the device's antennas.
